Google just improved its document viewer to be able to see gmail attachments, without any other software, without downloading the files. Click the 'view' link next to the file name.
It is now a sort of universal viewer as you can see most file formats in the email itself of in Google Docs Viewer.

From now, following file formats are accepted to be viewed from a browser :
  • Adobe PDF (.PDF)
  • Microsoft Word (.DOC and .DOCX)
  • Microsoft Excel (.XLS and .XLSX)
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 / 2010 (.PPTX)
  • Apple Pages (.PAGES)
  • Adobe Illustrator (.AI)
  • Adobe Photoshop (.PSD)
  • Autodesk AutoCad (.DXF)
  • Scalable Vector Graphics (.SVG)
  • PostScript (.EPS, .PS)
  • TrueType (.TTF)
  • XML Paper Specification (.XPS)
Moreover, several other files can be seen directly into the email system :
  • Images (.JPG, .PNG) and links to images from several web sites (Flickr, Picasa) with the appropriate features enabled in the Labs (in gmail settings)
  • Videos from Youtube when a link is embedded in the email
  • Google Docs (documents, presentation and spreadsheets), when a link is embedded with the appropriate feature enabled in the Labs
